LEDs vs Fluorescent

What does it take to build an ideal lighting environment for work or relaxation? To many, it may be purchasing light fixtures and placing it in every corner of the ceiling or placing in it a grid-like manner. This may not be entirely wrong as it gets the job done in illuminating the space. But this could result in an ineffective and inefficient light design. So what steps can we take to rectify this issue?

In this article, we will take a look at how LED triumphs over fluorescent and the benefits that one stands to gain when making the switch to LED lighting. 


Energy and Money Saving

To create an ideal light environment, it goes beyond the initial purchase of lights and its fixtures. Do take these factors into account when purchasing for new lighting, lifespan of light, lumens required and wattage.

LEDs in general may cost slightly more than fluorescent one, but they are able to last up to 3 times longer than conventional fluorescent lighting solutions. Apart from lasting longer than fluorescent lighting solutions, a LED is able to utilize energy more efficiently. LEDs generally have an efficacy rate of 80-100lm/w, whereas a conventional fluorescent bulb has an efficacy rate of <75lm/w. Hence, a LED bulb is able to emit the same amount of light as a fluorescent bulb, but requires less energy to operate. With this, LEDs are able to reduce operation and maintenance costs in the long run.

Environment Friendly

95% of the LEDs are recyclable, which makes them environment-friendly, and the waste management companies are willing to collect and recycle LEDs for a small fee. While fluorescent lightbulbs are much harder to recycle due to their mercury contents since mercury makes the recycling process difficult. 


Improve Studying/Working Effectiveness and Reduce Stress

Being influenced by a poorly-lit lighting environment at a workplace or school can cause the working or studying performance to decrease, preventing the workers or students from getting the desired result. Cool color temperatures (4100K–5000K) have been shown to improve the behavior of students with hyperactivity or have learning disabilities The cool bright color LEDs aid their concentration and focus on jobs and projects. Hyperactivity is also related to radiation stress, and the radiation emitted by fluorescent lighting can worsen it. Which results in working behavior and performance can improve when exposed to this radiation is reduced.  


Resolves A Common Health Problem In The Studying/Working Environment

A perfect lighting environment does not only apply its benefits to some people but to everyone, in a working or learning environment, there will be some people with unavoidable circumstances that when exposed to a normal lighting environment that seems to work for others but does not work for them.

Workers or students with autism are one of such cases. Fluorescent light has been proven to affect people with autism. Autistic people are more sensitive to the sub-visible flicker from direct fluorescent lights that might result in headaches, eyestrain, and increased repetitive behaviour. However, LEDs do not have visible flickering, making them an excellent choice for concentrating on tasks. 


UV Radiation

All fluorescent light bulbs emit high levels of UV radiation. While the majority of LEDs do not emit UV radiation.

The negativity of UV radiation:

  • Absorption of energy from UV rays can burn the skin and get sunburn.
  • 90% of skin cancers are due to UV radiation.
  • Prolonged exposure to UV or high intensities of UV damages the eyes tissue and can cause a ‘burning’ of the eye surface, called ‘snow blindness’ or photokeratitis.


With all of the points that are shown above, we can conclude that LED lights are not only beneficial in building lighting environments but also last longer, improve the working environment, reduce stress, and do not flicker. While the fluorescent does not last as long, flickers frequently, and can cause negative effects and health impacts to the body during usage. This makes the LEDs better than the fluorescent light bulbs and is the better choice for building the perfect lighting environment.
